Research Roundup: The Empirical Basis for Current Bills Supporting College Success for Foster Youth and Youth Experiencing Homelessness

Jul 20, 2022
FROM 10.00AM - 11.15AM

JBAY, SchoolHouse Connection and the Youth Law Center will be hosting a webinar highlighting the empirical basis for two federal bills. The federal bills hold great promise to remove these barriers, and increase support. The first, the Higher Education Access and Success for Homeless and Foster Youth Act of 2022 (HEASHFY) was introduced by U.S. Senators Patty Murray (D-WA) and Rob Portman (R-OH) in the Senate, and by U.S. Representatives Katherine Clark (D-5th/MA) and Don Young (R-At Large/AK) in the House of Representatives. The second, the Fostering Success in Higher Education Act was introduced by U.S. Representatives Danny K. Davis (D-7th/IL) and Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-8th/IL) in the U.S. House of Representatives, and by U.S. Senators Bob Casey (D-PA), Sherrod Brown (D-OH), and Tina Smith (D-MN) in the U.S. Senate.

The provisions of these bills are based not only on best practices from around the country, but also on research that points to the most effective tools for moving the needle on outcomes for homeless and foster youth. Join leading researchers to learn more about the empirical basis for these interventions and next steps to move these important pieces of legislation forward. Panelists will include:

• Rashida Crutchfield (California State University, Long Beach)
• Amy Dworsky (Chapin Hall, University of Chicago)
• Mary Haskett (North Carolina State University at Raleigh)
• Angelique Day (University of Washington)
