20 Years of Impact: JBAY to Celebrate Milestone Anniversary

20 Years of Impact: JBAY to Celebrate Milestone Anniversary

Where did the time go? Somehow, it’s been 20 years since retired State Senator John Burton founded John Burton Advocates for Youth (JBAY). On Tuesday,  April 23rd, JBAY will celebrate this important milestone at a reception at the California Museum in Sacramento.

In addition to celebrating 20 years of JBAY,  the early evening reception will honor the man himself, John Burton. Featured speakers will include Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas, President pro Tempore Emeritus State Senator Toni Atkins, Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis, Senator Tom Umberg and Senator Angelique Ashby.

According to JBAY Executive Director Amy Lemley, these elected officials and others are a key reason for the organization’s success.

“More than anything, we want to use the opportunity of this event to say thank you. We know there are many worthy competing priorities. California is a complex place and yet our state’s elected officials have continued to prioritize the needs of youth who have been in foster care or experienced homelessness.”

JBAY’s extensive network of partners is another critical key to its success and are invited to celebrate on April 23rd. “JBAY works closely with a wide range of partners including county agencies, associations, youth-serving nonprofit organizations, fellow advocates, state agencies and others. We draw on the expertise and political know-how of these partners to advance thoughtful policy solutions.”

The event will also be an opportunity to raise funds for JBAY’s Critical Needs and Opportunity Fund, which provides direct financial assistance to over 1,500 youth annually across California. JBAY’s Lorris Leung manages the program and hears regularly from youth and service providers about the impact it is making.

“From covering rent to having proper attire for interviews, car repairs and art supplies, these are some examples of how JBAY’s Critical Needs and Opportunity Fund have assisted youth. Our program has been able to help youth thrive and provide financial relief when an opportunity arises that they could not afford or were in a critical need.”

Attending the event will be several new members of JBAY’s board of directors including former Director of Finance Ana Matosantos, Teri Holoman of the California Teachers Association and former Lieutenant Governor Mona Pasquil Rogers.

With the event less than a month away, the event is filling up fast. To reserve your place follow this registration link. If you have any questions, please contact JBAY at info@jbay.org.
