On January 10th, the Newsom Administration proposed to eliminate two critical programs for foster youth in its proposed 2024-25 state budget. The first program provides supportive services to 1,300 former foster youth who hold a federally funded housing voucher. The provision of services is a condition of the voucher and without this funding, these young people will be at risk of homelessness. The second program would provide over 3,000 older youth in foster care with funding to pay their rent, ending the shameful practice of homelessness among current foster youth. These proposed cuts, totaling $32.5 million annually, will be debated during the budget season ahead. The final decision will be determined by the Newsom Administration in partnership with the State Senate and Assembly.
